Understanding Oneness

The concept of oneness, that is the notion that we are all one, is fascinating to me. When we are fully present in the moment we experience oneness. However, it seems we’ve become conditioned to the idea that we are all separate from one another. What exactly does this really mean?

All differences in this world are of degree, and not of kind, because oneness is the secret of everything.

If we look at consciousness we see that there is no “I”, “them”, “we”, or “you”. Everything is truly connected, the same. By reflecting on how the subconscious mind works we can see how oneness applies to obtaining inner peace.

The subconscious mind stores all of our experiences as impressions in the mind.  Anything that we focus on with thought and intensified feeling we impress onto the subconscious.  This is why methods such as NLP or hypnosis work as a shortcut to change impressions often leading to an immediate change of habits.

Oneness, from a mind perspective…

Whatever we feel, regardless of how it’s directed, we impress our subconscious mind with. What we impress ourselves with, we express and whatever we express we experience. If we become fixated on feeling anger towards another we end up feeding our own internal anger and rage. The same occurs with hatred – we cannot hate another without hating a part of our selves.

It’s paradoxical, as the subconscious is unable to distinguish between “I” or “them”; it accepts only what is felt. Consciously we think we are directing it outward but we feel from within. To understand and experience true unconditional self-love and the freedom that resides in such, we need to learn how to process and release all forms of hatred.

The beauty here is that you have full power over all of this. You have the ability to reflect on any experience and go through the emotions to process, release and heal. If you start processing the pain and then stop because it’s too painful, you end up stuck in the emotion causing you to relive the pain over and over.

You heal by moving through the pain, by continuing your journey through the emotions. This attention to self is a process that leads you to a change of impressions and thereby new experiences. A key to this healing process is learning how to drop into your heart and silence your mind, thus the power of practicing presence.

In the stillness of your presence, you can feel your own formless and timeless reality as the unmanifested life that animates your physical form. You can then feel the same life deep within every other human and every other creature. You look beyond the veil of form and separation. This is the realization of oneness. This is love.

In practicing this we expand and free ourselves from internal conflict, self-condemnation and neglect. We awaken a deep presence within ourselves allowing us to see beyond the beliefs that confine us and create the illusion of separation. We then respond more naturally with compassion to others (which reflects inwardly as well) while choosing a different path to avoid repeating past circumstances.

The greatest deception is to believe that we are separate from one another.
